Boy 1 lost his first two teeth this week. Unfortunately, it didn't happen in traditional milestone fashion. He has a whole lot of teeth and not much mouth. The new ones were forced to grow up behind the baby ones, rather than under them, and the baby teeth never got loose. So we had a bit of unpleasantness before the Tooth Fairy could work her magic. ("Her magic" in this case was not a coin but a tiny stuffed lion.)
I'll just say, Boy 1 was a trooper about it. The panic and--not to be overdramatic, but it really was--trauma didn't hit him until the procedure was over.
We're all very grateful for nitrous oxide and Novocaine, thank you very much.
Boy 1 got his baby teeth back in a teeny little plastic treasure chest. I was SHOCKED when I looked inside. No joke, the roots on one of those teeth was no less than three times the length of the exposed tooth. There's no way these teeth would have come out on their own, no matter how long we'd waited.
So. We're thankful for accurate dental x-rays, too. We know what to look for. If any more new teeth begin emerging in places other than where they should, we can get other baby teeth taken care of before the crowding gets so bad we have a painful orthodontic situation on our hands.
| New teeth under the tongue?! Fortunately, the dentist says these will probably move into the right spot on their own now that the baby teeth are not in the way. |
For now, we already know he'll have to have at least one more pulled, eventually. Boy 1 has inherited the familial extraneous tooth in the upper jaw.
Let's just hope the kiddo keeps smiling through it all. So far, so good!
